Hats - Choosing your Best Hat Style

1. Deep Full face

For an individual with a Deep full face it is recommended a medium height full crown hat to carry out big facial proportions. A Hat band of narrow to medium width gives needed effect of added crown height. This type of hat will usually look good with a matching hat band. The wide snap brim (between 2 1/2" - 3) should be snapped fully across (almost ear to ear), adds to apparent width, cutting down length of face. This face usually looks well in a Homburg with a flat set brim. If you wear this hat on back of the head it would make the deep full face look too prominent. Therefore, avoid taper crowns and some of the hat crowns that are too high or too low. Avoid tilting your hat to the back too much, this would make the big face to prominent. Slight tilt to the side is OK.

2. Short Full face

For an individual with a short full face it is recommended a medium crown hat. A very full crown hat would squat him down even more. Very slight taper tends to give height to figure. Extreme taper looks silly. A contrast hat band would look better than a matched band. Moderately wide brim is recommended, not too much snap. A wide brim or a brim snapped fully across (from ear to ear) would make him look shorter. An extreme snap or tilt over the face would shorten ones face even more. Avoid extremes in any direction. Be careful in using matched hat bands, which tends to make crown look taller, thus over-balancing face.

3. Long Slender face

An individual with a long slender face could wear a tapered, moderate height crown to make a hat seem part of the face. Fairly wide hat band cuts down apparent height from base to top of crown, unless low crown is used. A moderate width brim is recommended, also a full snapped brim, or a well rolled brim. A brim that is too wide would submerge the person's face. If the brim is too narrow or too flat it would emphasize long high lines. Give the hat a side tilt, and a slight back tilt. Avoid crowns that are too high, too full or square crown. Avoid particularly the wide, turned-up brim and ones too wide or too narrow.

4. Square face

An individual with a square face should wear a medium full crown hat, which should be rounded rather than square. Tapered crown would emphasize a jaw, a square crown would make the whole effect too massive, so avoid both. Use a full snap wide brim to cut down face area. Considerable side tilt breaks up square face lines. Round crowned Homburg or turned up brim is becoming, will help soften rock ribbed lines of the face. Avoid extreme taper crown and narrow brim particularly with short snap. Avoid putting the hat too far back on your heads.

5. Pear Shaped face

The Pear shaped face could use a full crown with a matching hat band to make it look bigger; the hat would look good with an extra wide brim snapped fully across. Wide Homburg or brim up is good because of bulky appearance of bound, curled brim. Avoid tapered or too low crowns. Definitely avoid narrow brim and narrow or shallow snap on the brim.

6. Top Heavy face

The top heavy face is a difficult type of face to fit because the big head size is likely to go with too much hat. A medium height tapered crown will fit a top heavy face adequately. A person can run into some trouble if the hat band is to wide. So it is recommended to use a narrow or medium width hat band. A medium wide brim, good roll, short snap, as flat brim and deep snap will overshadow the face. A side tilt helps lift the hat of the face. Be aware of wearing a hat to far back it would show too much of the wide forehead. Avoid wearing hats that are particularly too high, full crowns, wide brims, flat brims or too narrow of a brim. It is also not recommended to wear a very wide colorful hat band or a very noticeable hat band.

7. Short Slender face

The short slender face is recommended to wear a low or medium taper crown. The crown could be a high & narrow shape in front, and a low and spread shape in the back. A contrast hat band looks good with a medium crown, a narrow matched band can be used with a low crown. A medium hat brim, with a bound edge or an under wealth edge would avoid looking over wide. The hat could be worn on the head with a slight back and a side tilt. A homburg or other turned up brim often would add inches to the height of this man. Avoid everything that will give too much effect to the hat. Avoid a full crown, a high crown with a self band, or a snap brim too far over the face.

8. Long Nose

9. Prominent Jaw

Prominent Jaw face could wear moderately low crown, not too full, sometimes with slight taper crown. A big crown, a big brim would make him look more massive. A dinky crown and brim would make him look silly. A medium brim, therefore, with a full snap brim will help balance the jaw. Too sharp or a back roll will also seem to make the jaw come forward. Side dents help keep fair amount of crown front area without having the entire crown too full and massive. Don't tilt the hat too far back. Avoid a full high crown, extremes in brim and sharp up turn in the back brim.

10. Receding Chin

Crown must be low with slight taper to balance short chin. A narrow band is preferred, to emphasize low center line between top of crown and bottom of chin. The brim could be medium size or flat, however, if a rolled brim it should have a short snap at the front. A flat brim balances low crown and gives importance. Tilting the hat too far forward emphasizes crown and overshadows all but least attractive part of face. Tilting the hat too far back gives too much face area above the nose. Additional side tilts gives a desirable lift off face. Avoid high, full crown, extreme brims, deep snap brims, tilting too far forward or too far back.

11. Big Ears

In the case of a man with big ears it is recommended to wear a hat with a wide brim to help cover up his ears. It's suggested to wear as wide of a brim as his face and figure can stand so the ears look smaller by contrast. Fairly flat set brim, particularly at the back, so that brim doesn't roll up and silhouette the ears. A brim that is snapped fully is also helpful, and a crown that is not too tapered. Avoid the homburg and up-turned brim, also a narrow brim and a tapered crown.

12. Heavy Eyebrows

Eyebrows do not greatly affect the choice of a hat, but men with well-marked eyebrows can often wear the Homburg or up-turned brim becomingly. The eyebrows help balance the heavy brim of the Homburg. If the brows are heavy to the point of being too thick for your own liking, it may be better to cover them up with a brim that snaps well down. Often the man with heavy and well marked eyebrows can wear the light and pronounced colors in his hat, the eyebrows giving the hat an emphasis that can compete with the high colors.
