The felt derby hat can be cared for by regular brushing, and especially before exposing to rain. Even a drop of water on a dusty hat will leave a spot. Brush with a soft bristle horse hair hat brush. When a derby is put away for any length of time, always stand it on the side of the brim and crown, never store a derby bowler hat on the crown or brim.

The ideal way to store a derby bowler hat is in a hat box or hat traveling case. Felt Hats English hat case is designed specifically for derby bowler and small brim hats.

Derby Bowler Hats history

Lock's of St. James named their hat styles after the customers for whom they were created. The bowler hat which they designed in 1850 for William Coke of Norfolk, was hence originally titled the Coke hat. The bowler style hat was also made by the Bowler family of Southwark, and as its popularity grew, gradually became known as a bowler hat. The bowler hat was the first hard or stiff hat with a rounded crown. In the United States it was known as the derby hat, and was popular with all classes of tradesmen and artisans. The derby bowler hat has proved to be one of the most enduring and popular styles designed.

At the turn of the twentieth century, there were several interesting distinctions in the broad category of dress hats. Derby Bowler hats were stiff, not flexible, since they had been given a coat of shellac during construction to purposely stiffen them; the derby bowler hat did not conform to the shape of the wearer's head. The Felt Hats 150 Bowler hat by Christy's is a very stiff hat, and an exemplifies this avant-garde stiff bowler hat style.

Derby bowler hats were later available in two styles, stiff hats and flexible hats. The flexible derby or bowler hats did conform to the shape of the wearer's head, and these flexible hats were considered comfortable to wear. The Felt Hats 030 Derby hat embodies this flexible hat style.

Derby bowler hats are one of the most recognized style hats in history, and are frequently worn by some well known stars in classic Hollywood movies.
